Playing the game
AT THE END OF THE DAY, ALL KIDS WANT TO PLAY THE GAME. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT THE ACTIVITY IS, THERE SHOULD ALWAYS BE A GAME AT THE END OF IT. THE BEST GAMES ARE USUALLY THE ONES THAT KIDS INVENT THEMSELVES BUT IN INITIALLY YOU MAY HAVE TO MAKE SOME UP, USING WHATEVER EQUIPMENT AND SPACE YOU HAVE AVAILABLE.
All you need to remember is that the game needs some simple rules, a scoring system and a playing area with boundaries.
One of our favourite games was Cereal table tennis. Basically that was the kitchen table with a net made of cereal boxes, 2 pieces of thick cardboard for bats and a ping pong ball.
Rules – you throw the ball in with your opposite hand to start the point but after that you have to hit the ball with the piece of cardboard. The ball has to clear the net without bouncing and can only bounce once before you hit it back. If it hits the net or misses the table you lose the point.
Scoring system – alternate serves (throw ins) and first to 5 points wins a set. Change ends after each set and play first to win 2 sets.
Boundaries – the table and the net (cereal boxes).
CREATE A MINI FOOTBALL PITCH USING JUMPERS FOR GOALPOSTS, AND SOME LENGTHS OF ROPE FOR THE BOUNDARIES. ANYBODY REMEMBER “3 AND IN”? WHEN YOU SCORE 3 GOALS, YOU BECOME THE GOALKEEPER. IF IT’S JUST YOU AND ONE CHILD PLAYING, SET UP ONE GOAL MOUTH, A SHOOTING SPOT AND A FEW OBSTACLES FOR DRIBBLING THE BALL AROUND BEFORE YOU CAN SCORE…
Make a mini tennis or volleyball court with robe or cone boundaries and a net made from 2 chairs and a role of parcel tape. Or a cricket pitch with a stack of cereal boxes, a ball and a poster tube bat….. Your playing area can be as big or small as you want and the equipment can be anything from hands, feet, heads to biscuit tin lids, mini bats, balloons, water bombs….all you need is a bit of imagination…
